Partner Breath Pacer
In pairs, one student acts as the pacer, raising and lowering a hand very slowly while the other breathes along with it, so the rhythm gradually stretches out. It builds breath control after exercise, focus and sensitivity toward a partner.
How to play
- Form pairs sitting on the floor facing each other about three feet apart; A is the pacer and B is the breather (30 sec).
- A holds a hand in front of B at chest height; as the hand rises, B breathes in through the nose, and as it lowers, B breathes out through the mouth.
- First minute: A follows B's natural rhythm, still fast from the game, to get in sync.
- Minutes two and three: A slows the movement little by little, especially the lowering, until it reaches about four seconds up and six seconds down, watching that B stays comfortable.
- Switch roles and repeat the sequence (2 min).
- 30-second wrap-up: each student tells their partner whether the final rhythm felt comfortable or too slow.
Rules
- The pacer slows the rhythm gradually; never make anyone hold their breath.
- If the breather feels short of air, they lift a finger and the pacer speeds up a little.
- Work in silence, with no laughing or distractions.
- Keep three feet apart; the hand never touches the partner.
Variations
Easier
Keep the natural rhythm the whole time without slowing it.
Standard
Slow the rhythm to four seconds up and six seconds down.
Harder
Reach five seconds up and eight down, adding a short pause before the inhale.
Adaptations
- For students with limited arm mobility, the pacer can guide with a head nod or by whispering the count.
- For students with visual impairments, the pacer rests a hand on their partner's forearm and presses gently while lowering.
- For students with asthma or lower fitness, keep a shorter, comfortable rhythm and skip any pauses.
Learning goals
- Bring breathing back to a slow rhythm after exercise.
- Adjust to a partner's rhythm with sensitivity.
- Discover that a longer exhale helps them calm down.
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is the pacer going too slow from the start; insist on starting with the partner's real rhythm. Walk around the pairs and make sure nobody is holding their breath.
