Partner Back Massage with a Ball and Pressure Scale
In pairs, one student rolls a ball over their partner's back, seated or lying face down, while the partner signals their preferred pressure on a 1-to-5 finger scale. It works on muscle relaxation, nonverbal communication and respect for consent.
How to play
- Explain the allowed areas, the muscles on both sides of the spine and the upper back, and the off-limits ones: spine, neck and kidneys (1 min).
- Students pick their own partners and each decides whether to receive a massage or do self-massage against the wall instead (1 min).
- Student A, lying down or seated, gets the massage with slow circles and shows the preferred pressure from 1 to 5 with their fingers (3 min).
- Switch roles and repeat (3 min).
Rules
- Never press on the spine, neck or lower back.
- The receiver can stop at any moment by saying «stop» or raising a hand.
- No clear consent, no massage: do self-massage against the wall.
- Massage over clothing only.
Variations
Easier
Solo self-massage with the ball between the back and the wall.
Standard
Partner massage with a 1-to-5 pressure scale.
Harder
The giver alternates circles, long glides and sustained pressure, and asks which the partner prefers.
Adaptations
- Autism or touch sensitivity: self-massage against the wall, controlling the pressure themselves.
- Wheelchair users: get an upper-back massage leaning forward onto a cushion or their arms.
- Hearing impairment: show the pressure scale with fingers, no talking needed.
Learning goals
- Give a simple ball massage safely.
- Communicate body preferences and limits clearly.
- Respect a partner's consent and well-being.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 15
- yoga mats: 15
Teacher tip
Always keep the wall option visible so no one feels pressured. Don't assign partners yourself for this activity.
