Parachute Launch and Catch
The whole class launches a ball into the air with one big pull of the parachute and must catch it back on the tight canopy, chaining launches without letting it hit the ground. Students work on catching, group timing and tracking a ball in flight.
How to play
- Students hold the parachute edge with both hands at waist height; set a soft ball in the middle (1 min).
- Launch: on 'one, two, three, up!', everyone snaps their arms overhead and the ball flies up; then arms come down to the waist and the canopy pulls tight to catch it (3 min).
- Chain challenge: count out loud how many launches and catches you make in a row. If the ball falls off, the closest student returns it and a new chain starts (3 min).
- Progression: while the ball is in the air, everyone claps once, then twice, and finally touches one knee to the ground without letting go (4 min).
- Accuracy challenge: launch the ball toward one half of the parachute so it lands on a certain color (2 min).
- Finish with the giant ball: a slow, high launch and a soft catch together (2 min).
Rules
- Launch only on the group count; nobody pulls on their own.
- Catch the ball with the canopy, never with your hands.
- The chain belongs to the whole class: celebrate every new record.
- Safety: always watch the ball, and nobody goes under the canopy.
Variations
Easier
A light giant ball, which comes down more slowly.
Standard
A soft ball and launch chains with claps.
Harder
Two balls launched at once, and both must be caught.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold the edge from the wheelchair with a strap tied to the handle, and the group adjusts the height in that section.
- Autism or noise sensitivity: show the count with raised fingers instead of shouting.
- Fitness level: a student with tired arms sits out one round as the chain counter.
Learning goals
- Track a ball's flight to catch it.
- Time a powerful movement with the whole group.
- Beat a class record through practice.
Equipment for a class of 25
- play parachute: 1
- soft balls: 2
- giant ball: 1
Teacher tip
The usual mistake is not pulling the canopy tight again after the launch, so the ball sinks; cue 'up, then waist'. On windy days, use a heavier ball.
