Parachute Cargo Walk
The whole class holds the parachute tight and carries a giant ball along a cone course with turns, crouching sections and side shuffles without dropping it. Students work on cooperation, group decision-making and moving together.
How to play
- Use cones to mark a course of about 40 yards with a full turn, a sideways section, a crouching 'tunnel' and a circular finish (2 min).
- The group holds the parachute tight at waist height with the giant ball in the middle and practices standing still: lift, lower, rotate (3 min).
- First trip at a walk. If the ball falls, put it back on at that spot and keep going; the teacher counts drops (4 min).
- The group gets 1 minute to choose two 'route captains' who call directions and to agree on a stop word (1 min).
- Second and third trips with 4 foam balls added: arrive with more cargo and fewer drops than before (7 min).
- At the finish, lower the canopy slowly to set the cargo inside the circle, then discuss which signal helped most (3 min).
Rules
- Always walk: no running with the parachute.
- During the trip only the captains talk; everyone else uses gestures.
- If someone trips, anyone says the stop word and everyone freezes.
- Cargo is only touched with the canopy, except to reset it after a drop.
Variations
Easier
A straight course with no stations, carrying only the giant ball.
Standard
Four stations, carrying one giant ball and four foam balls.
Harder
Tight turns in total silence, following the captains' hand signals.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is a route captain or holds the front edge, where the path is widest.
- Shyness or autism: a fixed, predictable job, such as calling out each cone, lets them take part without the spotlight.
- Fitness level: groups that control the cargo well may jog lightly on straight sections.
Learning goals
- Coordinate the whole group's movement toward a shared goal.
- Make route decisions and communicate them clearly.
- Evaluate as a group which strategy works best.
Equipment for a class of 25
- play parachute: 1
- giant ball: 1
- foam balls: 4
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Keep the course clear of benches and goals, because the group watches the canopy, not the floor. Wind blows the giant ball away, so on windy days use the gym.
