Paper Airplane Landing Challenge
Each student folds a paper airplane, and in small groups they try to land it inside hoops placed at different distances. It works accurate throwing, adjusting technique based on results, and steady improvement through trial and error.
How to play
- Fold a simple dart model step by step with the whole class; each student makes 2 airplanes and writes their name on them (6 min).
- Mark a launch line and a runway with 3 hoops at 10, 16 and 23 ft (1, 2 and 3 points) for each of 5 groups of 5 (1 min).
- Taking turns, each player throws twice; a plane that stops inside a hoop scores its points. Planes are collected after the whole group has thrown (8 min).
- Design lab (3 min): each student adjusts their plane (bend up the wing tips, add a nose fold) and tests it once.
- Team challenge (5 min): the group adds up all its points and compares with its first round.
- Wrap-up (2 min): discuss which change helped planes fly best and which arm motion worked.
Rules
- Throw only toward the runway, never at a classmate.
- Safety: fold the nose in so the tip is blunt.
- Nobody crosses the line until the whole group has thrown.
- Everyone throws and takes care of their own plane.
Variations
Easier
Place hoops at 6, 10 and 13 ft, and touching a hoop counts.
Standard
Hoops at 10, 16 and 23 ft, and the plane must stop inside.
Harder
Add a hoop hanging 5 ft high that the plane must fly through before landing.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student throws seated and a partner retrieves the plane.
- Students with autism: provide a picture card of the folding steps and a set spot in line.
- Skill level: students who struggle with folding get a pre-folded plane and focus on throwing.
Learning goals
- Adjust force and release angle for an accurate landing.
- Connect changes to the plane with the results.
- Improve their own score through trial and error.
Equipment for a class of 25
- copy paper: 60
- hoops: 15
- masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
Have a large sample plane ready to show each fold. The typical mistake is a hard upward throw, so cue a gentle, level push at shoulder height.
