Paddle Cone Knockdown
A one-on-one paddle duel on a mini court where each player defends three cones set on their own back line. Students practice hitting after a bounce, aiming at a target, and deciding when to go after the cones and when to keep the rally going.
How to play
- Chalk mini courts about 25 by 12 ft with a center line; each player sets 3 cones on their back line about 3 ft apart (3 min).
- Play 1 on 1 with a paddle and a tennis ball: serve underhand after a bounce, and always hit after one bounce on your side.
- Score 1 point if the opponent misses the return or hits it out, and 2 points if the ball knocks down one of their cones.
- Whoever loses a cone sets it back up right away; serve alternates every 2 points.
- Play 4-minute games; the winner moves one court up toward court 1 and the loser moves one court down (14 min).
Rules
- Safety: leave 6 ft between courts, and nobody enters another court to get a ball during a point.
- The ball must bounce exactly once on your side before you hit it.
- You may not block the cones with your body or feet.
Variations
Easier
Set the cones closer together, use bigger cones, and allow two bounces before hitting.
Standard
Three cones per side, one bounce, and 2 points for each knocked-down cone.
Harder
Play 2 on 2, and partners must alternate hits.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play on a narrower court, about 6 ft wide, with two bounces allowed.
- Autism or shyness: start on a middle court without moving up or down, with a trusted partner.
- Skill level: students who struggle can use a foam ball and bigger cones.
Learning goals
- Hit after a bounce with a paddle, aiming at a target.
- Choose between a risky shot and a safe one depending on the situation.
- Keep score honestly and accept the result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 25
- tennis balls: 15
- cones: 78
- chalk: 6
Teacher tip
Moving up and down courts keeps students playing opponents at a similar level; do not turn it into a public ranking. Have players make sure all cones are standing before every serve to avoid arguments.
