Pack Fit Check: Four Straps and Go
In pairs, students learn to fit a backpack in the right order and test it on the move. It gets the body ready and helps prevent back and shoulder pain on hikes.

How to play
- Shoulder, neck, and hip mobility while walking around the yard (2 min).
- Loose pack hanging off one shoulder: walk fast and notice how it pulls and swings (1 min).
- Pair fitting in order: both shoulder straps, height (the pack sits high and snug), chest strap, and hip belt if it has one; the partner checks there's no gap at the back (3 min).
- Brisk walk around the cone course: fast pace, direction changes, and easy jogging stretches (3 min).
- Final check: does the pack bounce when you jog? Your partner helps readjust and you talk about the difference (1 min).
Rules
- Light load only: a jacket and a water bottle, never books.
- Tighten straps gradually, no yanking.
- No jumping or fast running with the pack on.
- Afterward, line up the packs instead of dropping them on the ground.
Variations
Easier
Shoulder straps and chest strap only, walking with no jogging.
Standard
Full fit and the course with easy jogging.
Harder
Timed fitting in pairs without losing quality: the partner checks with four questions.
Adaptations
- Students with back pain: carry an empty pack and act as a checker for other pairs.
- Wheelchair users: learn the fit on their partner's pack and check it; they can hang it on the chair back to compare.
- Students who forgot their pack: share with another pair and take turns on the course.
Learning goals
- Fit a backpack in the right order.
- Keep an upright posture while walking with a load.
- Warm up the body before the lesson.
Equipment for a class of 25
- backpacks: 15
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Remind students the day before to bring an empty backpack with a jacket and a bottle. Common mistake: wearing it too low, down at the hips; it should sit high and close to the back.
