Overhead Shuttle Throw Warm-Up
A no-racket badminton warm-up in which students throw the shuttle by hand, copying the overhead clear. It loosens the shoulder and teaches the turn, high elbow, and wrist snap they will later use with the racket.
How to play
- Pairs face each other 4 m (13 ft) apart, each with a shuttle, with a line of cones marking their spot.
- Mobility (1 min): shoulder and arm circles and trunk rotations with arms out wide.
- Motion (2 min): stand sideways, throwing-side foot back, free arm pointing up, elbow high; throw with a wrist snap.
- Long throw (2 min): at 7 m, try to land the shuttle in the zone marked behind the partner.
- With footwork (2 min): two side steps back, load the back foot, and throw while shifting weight forward.
- Challenge (1 min): each pair counts how many shuttles in a row they catch.
Rules
- All pairs throw in the same direction.
- Throw only when your partner is looking.
- Wait for the next pair to stop before picking up a shuttle.
- The throwing elbow stays above the shoulder.
Variations
Easier
Throw from 3 m and catch with both hands.
Standard
Throw at 7 m with a back-to-front weight shift.
Harder
Land it in a hoop 8 m away; catch with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throw seated by rotating the torso, partner at 3 m.
- Visual impairment: brightly colored shuttle and a clap from the partner before each throw.
- Lower fitness: no footwork and breaks between sets.
Learning goals
- Copy the clear with a high elbow and wrist snap.
- Shift weight from the back foot to the front foot.
- Warm up the shoulder before using the racket.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Shuttlecocks: 26
- cones: 13
Teacher tip
If the shuttle flies flat and straight, the elbow was low, which is exactly the habit this drill fixes. Old or damaged shuttles work perfectly here.
