Oval Pursuit Relay
Two teams start on opposite sides of a cone oval and run one-lap relay legs, trying to catch the other team's runner. Students work on sustained speed, passing the baton on the move, and working together to hold the team's lead.
How to play
- Set two cone ovals about 60 m around; on each, two teams of 6 in different colored pinnies face off, and the extra student serves as judge (3 min).
- Each team lines up in its exchange zone, one on each side of the oval, directly across from the other (1 min).
- Practice the handoff: the waiting runner starts moving when the teammate is 3 m away and takes the baton with an open hand reaching back (3 min).
- Race: on the whistle the first two runners go; each runs one full lap and passes the baton; a team wins by tagging the other runner's back or by being ahead when everyone has run (4 min).
- Two-minute rest; each team changes its running order and picks its anchor.
- Race 2 against a team from the other oval; add up the wins from both races (5 min).
Rules
- Always run outside the cones and in the same direction.
- Pass the baton inside the exchange zone marked by two cones; outside it, go back to the zone.
- Students waiting their turn stand inside the oval, never on the track.
Variations
Easier
Run half laps with two exchange zones, and swap the baton for a hand slap if needed.
Standard
Each runner completes one full lap of about 60 meters with a moving baton handoff.
Harder
Grow the oval to 80 meters and have each runner go twice in alternating order.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student runs a straight section inside the oval and hands off at mid-lap, with the distance adjusted.
- Shy students: offer the leadoff leg, which starts with everyone else and does not involve receiving the baton under pressure.
- Lower fitness: each team can have one half-lap leg for anyone who needs it.
Learning goals
- Hold a high speed for a full lap.
- Pass and receive the baton without stopping.
- Plan the most effective running order with the team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
- batons: 4
- pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Have the waiting team cheer from inside the oval so nobody steps onto the track. If one team keeps winning, swap two runners between teams before race 2.
