Outdoor Knots Relay Challenge
Students learn four knots that come in handy on hikes and camping trips (figure eight, bowline, clove hitch and taut-line hitch) and then practice them in a team relay where each knot must be tied correctly to score. They work on hand skills, independence and safety outdoors.
How to play
- In pairs, with a 6-foot rope, teach the figure eight and the bowline with a slow demo and a step-by-step picture card; 6 minutes.
- Teach the clove hitch around a post or pole and the taut-line hitch for tightening a tent line; 6 minutes.
- Form 5 teams of 5 in lines behind a cone; 15 yards away there is a station with ropes and a post.
- Relay: on the signal, the first student runs to the station, draws a card showing which knot to tie, ties it and raises a hand; you or a judge from another team checks it, and if it is right, the student returns and the next one goes. 8 minutes.
- Each correct knot scores 1 point; if it is wrong, untie it and try again. The team with the most correct knots when time is up wins.
- Wrap up for 3 minutes: each team explains what one of the knots is used for outdoors.
Rules
- Ropes never go around anyone's neck and are never used to pull someone.
- Only knots checked and approved by the judge score.
- Run on the way out, walk on the way back so you do not collide with the next runner.
Variations
Easier
Use only the figure eight and clove hitch, with the picture card always in view.
Standard
Four random knots, with the judge checking every attempt.
Harder
Tie the knots with eyes closed or wearing gloves, as in cold weather.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility stays at the station as judge or ties knots seated while a teammate covers the running leg.
- For students who are blind or visually impaired, use thick rope and teach each knot by guiding their hands, counting the steps out loud.
- Students with less hand dexterity can start with a thicker rope and choose between two cards.
Learning goals
- Tie four basic outdoor knots correctly.
- Know what each knot is used for in outdoor activities.
- Work as a team under time pressure without losing accuracy.
