One-Minute Mini-Lesson: Explain a Game Fast
Each group gets an unfamiliar game on a card and has one minute, demo included, to teach it to another group so they can play right away with no confusion. Students work on clear communication, getting to the point, and leading with confidence.
How to play
- Make 6 groups of 4 (one of 5) and give each a task card with a different game they don't know: rescue tag, flag grab, pinnie passing, and so on (1 min).
- Prep (3 min): the group reads the card, plans what to say in three sentences, and picks who will demo.
- Pair up groups. Group A gets 60 timed seconds to teach its game to Group B, which then plays it for 3 minutes while A watches and coaches without stopping play.
- Group B scores the explanation 1 to 3: totally clear, one question, or play had to stop. Then switch roles (4 min per swap, 8 min total).
- Second round with new pairings and only 45 seconds to explain (6 min); finish with each group sharing one trick that worked (2 min).
Rules
- Explain with the group in a semicircle, their backs to the sun, and no ball in your hands.
- When time's up you can't add anything: they play with what you said.
- Safety: each game gets its own coned-off area and uses foam balls only.
- Listeners don't interrupt until the minute is over.
Variations
Easier
Allow 90 seconds and let the group read from the card while explaining.
Standard
Sixty seconds with a demo and no reading from the card.
Harder
A 45-second explanation and the playing group can't ask any questions.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: gives the verbal explanation while a teammate demos.
- Hearing impairment: the group sketches the game diagram on the card and shows it while explaining.
- Shyness: explains only how to score, which is the shortest part.
Learning goals
- Boil a game down to its essential rules in a short time.
- Use a demonstration to back up verbal instructions.
- Judge how clear an explanation was by how the game runs.
Equipment for a class of 25
- task cards: 6
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 12
- foam balls: 6
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Teach the formula “goal, how to score, one safety rule” before starting. Run the stopwatch yourself so every group gets the same pace.
