Object Theater with Gym Equipment
In groups, students create and perform a short play starring gym equipment (a cone, a hoop, a ball) handled like characters. It builds group creation, expressive object handling and story structure with a beginning, a problem and an ending.
How to play
- Example (3 min): a shy cone will not jump through the hoop, a ball cheers it on and it makes it. The objects are the actors; people just bring them to life.
- Form 5 groups of 5 (2 min). Each picks 3 items (cones, hoops, balls, scarves, poles) and decides who each character is.
- Create (8 min): groups invent a 1-minute story with a beginning, a problem and an ending. Everyone handles an object or becomes part of the set.
- Rehearse (4 min): run it twice while you suggest bigger movements and pauses.
- Performance (6 min): each group performs for the class and the audience explains the story they understood.
- Wrap-up (2 min): talk about what made the objects feel most alive.
Rules
- Objects are never thrown at the audience or at classmates.
- Every group member takes part in the play.
- Keep talking to a minimum: the story should come across mainly through how the objects move.
Variations
Easier
Give each group a written three-panel story so they only decide how to move it.
Standard
A free 1-minute story with three objects and a beginning, problem and ending.
Harder
A play with no words at all, music chosen by the group, and one object that changes character halfway through.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student handles the objects from a table or bench that serves as the group's stage.
- Hearing impairment: the group relies more on movement than lines, and scene changes are cued with an agreed gesture.
- Shy students: they can be the hidden narrator or part of the body set instead of handling objects up front.
Learning goals
- Bring objects to life through expressive handling.
- Create a clearly structured story as a group.
- Respond respectfully to classmates' performances.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
The most common mistake is that students act themselves and forget the objects: remind them the audience should be watching the cone, not the person moving it. Keep a strict one-minute limit per play.
