Nyama Nyama: Jump If It's an Animal
A traditional listening game from Kenya: 'nyama' means meat or animal in Swahili. The leader chants 'nyama, nyama' and names something; if it is an animal, everyone jumps and repeats 'nyama!', and if not, they freeze. Students work on attention, reaction time, and impulse control.
How to play
- Form 3 circles of 8-9 students spread apart. Explain the origin: in Kenya you jump only if the animal is one people eat; in class we jump for any animal (1 min).
- Everyone bounces gently in place. The teacher chants 'nyama, nyama, nyama...' and ends with one word: 'nyama lion!' or 'nyama table!'
- If it is an animal, everyone does a vertical jump shouting 'nyama!'; if not, they freeze like statues. A student who makes a mistake jogs one lap around the outside of the circle and rejoins (3 min).
- Add categories: if the animal flies, jump flapping your arms; if it swims, land in a squat and make a fish face (3 min).
- Each circle picks a student leader who makes 6 calls, then passes the role to the right (4 min).
- To finish, bring the three circles together for a very fast round of 10 calls by the teacher (1 min).
Rules
- Jump and land in your own spot without moving into a classmate's space.
- Mistakes do not knock anyone out: do your lap and come back in.
- The leader cannot use the same word twice in a row.
- No one laughs at other people's mistakes.
Variations
Easier
Use only very familiar animals and objects and chant slowly.
Standard
Animals and objects mixed together, with the flying and swimming categories.
Harder
Go back to the traditional rule: jump only if the animal is eaten, and the leader chants faster and faster.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: instead of jumping, the student raises both arms or claps above their head.
- Hearing impairment: the leader also shows a picture card of the animal or object.
- Fitness level: a student who gets tired may rise onto their toes instead of doing a full jump.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a spoken cue and hold back the response when it is not the right moment.
- Jump and land in place with control.
- Learn about a traditional game from Kenya and a few Swahili words.
Teacher tip
The leader's trick is to stretch out the 'nyama, nyama' to build suspense before the word. Use the game to teach other Swahili words such as 'simba' (lion) or 'tembo' (elephant).
