No-Tackle Bulldog: Cross the Meadow, Grow the Guard
A no-tackle version of bulldog, a British schoolyard game: run from one end of the field to the other without getting tagged by a guard. It warms up the whole body and trains changes of direction and reading the gaps.
How to play
- Mark a rectangle of about 30 × 20 m with cones. The whole class lines up on one end line, with three guards in pinnies in the middle (1 min).
- Speed-walk round: on "Meadow!" everyone crosses and guards may only tag with a hand on the back or shoulder (2 min).
- Running rounds: anyone tagged puts on a pinnie and joins the guards for the next crossing (3 min).
- When five runners are left, restart with new guards picked from students who haven't been one yet (3 min).
- Last crossing in hand-holding pairs: a tagged pair joins the guards together (1 min).
Rules
- Tag with an open hand on the back or shoulder only; no grabbing or pushing.
- Stepping out of the rectangle to dodge makes you a guard.
- Keep the field at least 2 m away from walls, goals and benches.
- Guards always wait in the middle zone until the signal.
Variations
Easier
Speed-walk crossings, and guards must keep one foot on the center line.
Standard
Three starting guards and running crossings.
Harder
Narrow the field to 15 m and start with four guards.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: acts as a fixed guard inside a hoop in the middle and tags with a pool noodle.
- Hearing impairment: give the start by dropping a scarf as well as calling out.
- Less confident or slower students: cross holding a partner's hand; the pair counts as one runner.
Learning goals
- Raise the heart rate with short sprints and changes of pace.
- Read the gaps between defenders and decide when to go.
- Follow safe-tagging rules in a whole-class chase game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
Restart before only two or three runners remain: an everyone-against-one finish adds nothing and puts kids on the spot. Common mistake: everyone sprints straight across at once; ask who crossed by looking for gaps.
