Name That Muscle: Partner Stretch Challenge
A calm partner game: one student draws a card with a muscle name and the other must perform a correct stretch for it. It reviews basic anatomy applied to flexibility and teaches students to check a partner's technique.
How to play
- Each pair gets a deck of 8 cards: hamstrings, quads, calves, glutes, adductors, chest, lats, and triceps. The back shows the muscle and two correct stretches.
- Partner A draws a card and quietly reads only the muscle name. Partner B has 10 seconds to get into a stretch.
- A checks the back: if it is correct, the pair scores a point and B holds it for 20 seconds; if not, they do a pictured stretch together.
- Partners switch roles after every card until the deck is done, about 5 minutes.
- Final 2-minute round: the teacher demonstrates a stretch, pairs whisper the muscle, the answer is revealed, and everyone copies it.
Rules
- Stretches stay slow and bounce-free, even when you want to score fast.
- Correct with words or a light touch, never by pushing.
- Talk quietly so you don't give hints to other pairs.
- No one is eliminated; points just show what the pair knows.
Variations
Easier
Use only the 4 leg cards with the stretch pictures visible from the start.
Standard
Use the 8-muscle deck with 10 seconds to choose a stretch.
Harder
B must also name a sports movement that uses the muscle and suggest a stretch not shown on the card.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated stretches count, and the deck includes a chair option for every muscle.
- Shyness: in the final round, students answer only to their partner.
- Low prior knowledge: first show a body poster with the 8 muscles labeled.
Learning goals
- Locate the major muscle groups and match them with a stretch.
- Perform static stretches with correct technique.
- Respectfully correct a partner's technique.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards (13 decks of 8): 104
Teacher tip
Laminate the decks so they last all year and keep a spare set. It works as an informal check of the anatomy covered in a fitness unit.
