My Start in Slow Motion: The Video Corner
At the end of a starts or hurdles session, groups review slow-motion videos they recorded of their own performance and write down one improvement. Students learn to use technology for self-assessment and to protect privacy.
How to play
- Groups of five or six at each corner, with a school tablet and the videos recorded in the session (2 min).
- Each student watches their start in slow motion looking for three points: lean, first step, and arm drive (3 min).
- Write one sentence about something they do well and one thing they'll change (2 min).
- While others watch their videos, gentle leg stretches in the corner (2 min).
- Delete the videos in front of the teacher and hand back the tablets (1 min).
Rules
- Record only on school tablets, never on personal phones.
- Each student decides whether their video is watched by the group or only by them.
- Comments are about technique only, never about bodies.
- All videos are deleted at the end.
Variations
Easier
Review just one technical point.
Standard
Review three points and write one improvement.
Harder
Compare two of their own videos (start and end of the session) side by side.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: the partner describes what's on screen and the focus shifts to how the movement felt.
- Students who don't want to be filmed: self-assess with a feelings checklist and by watching a classmate who gives permission.
- Students with writing difficulties: record a voice note with their improvement.
Learning goals
- Analyze their own technique with digital help.
- Identify one strength and one area to improve.
- Respect others' privacy and image.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets: 5
Teacher tip
Get recording consent under your school's policy before the unit. Tablets without a slow-motion app usually let you pause frame by frame. Common mistake: laughing at others' videos; make it clear the corner is a work station.
