Music-On Flag Tag
Every student wears a flag belt and can pull flags only while the music is playing; when it stops, everyone freezes and the students holding the most flags do the most exercise. It trains dodging and decision-making in a warm-up with no one sitting out.
How to play
- Each student puts on a flag belt with flags at the back or sides. Mark off half the court with cones or lines.
- One minute of free jogging, dodging others without pulling flags, to warm up and spread out.
- With the music on, everyone tries to pull flags while protecting their own. Pulled flags get tucked into the waistband without covering your own.
- Students who lose their flag keep playing: if they have pulled flags they wear one; if not, they do 5 jumping jacks on the sideline and grab a spare from the box.
- When the music stops, everyone freezes, counts their flags and does one squat per flag. Then return all flags to the box and give each student one.
- Play 4 rounds of 1 minute and finish with 1 minute of easy jogging.
Rules
- Pull only flags; never grab clothing or bodies.
- Don't cover or hold your own flag with your hands.
- Safety: when freezing, stop in two or three steps; don't dive to the floor.
- Pull one flag at a time and let go of your opponent right away.
Variations
Easier
Play on the whole court and allow flag pulls only within 3 steps of a line.
Standard
Everyone wears one flag on half the court, for 4 one-minute rounds.
Harder
Play on a quarter of the court with partners holding hands, defending two flags.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility wear the flag on the wheelchair or shoulder and may pull with a grabber or a pool noodle.
- For students with hearing loss, flick the lights or raise a red cone when the music stops.
- Less-fit students may do half squats for their count.
Learning goals
- Improve dodging and changes of direction in a tight space.
- Decide when to attack and when to protect your own flag.
- Play fair and avoid unsafe contact.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flag belts: 30
- music (speaker): 1
Teacher tip
The penalty for students with the most flags balances the game so the same kids don't always win. Check that all flags are on properly before starting.
