Modified Thomas Test Partner Check
A school-friendly mat version of a classic hip flexor flexibility test: lying down, a student hugs one knee to the chest while a partner watches whether the other leg lifts off the floor. It ends with a hip flexor stretch chosen based on the result.
How to play
- The teacher explains that sitting for hours tightens the muscles at the front of the hip and demonstrates the test (1 min).
- Students pair up with a mat and a form; A lies face up with both legs straight (0.5 min).
- A hugs the right knee to the chest until the lower back is flat on the mat; B crouches at mat level and watches the left leg (1 min).
- B marks the form: green if the back of the left thigh stays on the floor, yellow if it lifts a little, red if it clearly lifts or the knee bends; repeat with the other leg (1 min).
- Partners switch roles and A watches and records for B (1.5 min).
- Based on the result, each student does a kneeling lunge hip flexor stretch: 20 seconds per side if green, and two 30-second holds on any yellow or red side (2.5 min).
Rules
- The lower back must stay flat on the mat during the test.
- The straight leg stays relaxed, not pressed into the floor.
- Safety: in the kneeling lunge, the knee rests on the mat and the torso stays upright.
Variations
Easier
Just watch whether the leg lifts or not, without colors.
Standard
Test both legs, rate them in three colors, and stretch based on the result.
Harder
Repeat the test after stretching to see whether the leg stays down better.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: if lying down isn't possible, the student acts as observer and does a hip stretch seated at the edge of the chair.
- Shyness: keep the same trusted partner for the whole unit.
- Fitness level: students who score green on both legs keep the stretch for prevention and help explain the technique.
Learning goals
- Assess hip flexor flexibility in a simple way.
- Connect sedentary habits with loss of flexibility.
- Choose and perform a stretch based on the test result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
- self-assessment forms: 25
Teacher tip
Common mistake: arching the back instead of pulling the knee fully to the chest, which skews the test.
