Mobility from 14 to 80: A Warm-Up for Two Generations

How to play
- The teacher explains: at an event with a senior center, the warm-up must work seated or standing with support, with no jumping or sudden twisting (1 min).
- Standing behind the chair with one hand on the backrest, mobility from top to bottom: gentle neck, shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles (3 min).
- In threes, each group invents a seated mobility exercise with an easy-to-remember name like “the windshield wiper” or “ride the bike” (2 min).
- Each group teaches its exercise to the whole class in 30 seconds, slowly, counting out loud to eight (3 min).
- Show of hands to pick the five exercises that would make it to the event (1 min).
Rules
- Slow movements, comfortable range, no pain.
- No forcing the neck backward.
- Chairs against the wall or otherwise stable.
- Talk about abilities and care, never “old people” jokes.
Variations
Easier
Everything seated, with the teacher as the model.
Standard
Mix of standing with support and seated.
Harder
Each group adds a harder version of its exercise for very active older adults.
Adaptations
- Students in wheelchairs: do the whole sequence seated and serve as natural models.
- Ankle or knee injury: seated version of the leg exercises.
- Hard-of-hearing students: the count to eight is also shown on fingers.
Learning goals
- Safely move the major joints.
- Adapt a warm-up for older adults.
- Explain an exercise slowly and clearly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chairs: 28
Teacher tip
If an in-person visit isn't possible, the class can record the routine or make a handout for a local senior center, with their permission. If a high-intensity block comes next, add a minute of brisk walking at the end.
