Mirror Stance: Judo Sliding Footwork
A pair mirror warm-up using basic judo footwork: the sliding step that never crosses the feet and the hip turn. It wakes up the legs and builds stability for grip games.

How to play
- Judo natural stance (shizentai): feet shoulder-width, soft knees, weight even; everyone tries it and sways (2 min).
- Partners face each other one meter apart: one leads with tsugi-ashi (one foot steps, the other follows without passing it) and the other mirrors (3 min).
- Same game with a light forearm grip: the leader moves and the partner follows without losing the stance (2 min).
- Switch roles and add the hip turn (tai-sabaki): a half turn on one foot to dodge (2 min).
- Neck, wrist and ankle mobility in place (1 min).
Rules
- Feet slide; they never cross or hop.
- Light grip: no twisting wrists or fingers.
- Each pair stays in its own space.
Variations
Easier
Forward and back only, no grip.
Standard
Four directions, with grip and hip turn.
Harder
The leader changes direction without warning and the partner tries to keep the one-meter gap.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: do the whole drill with a forearm grip to feel the movement.
- Recent ankle sprain: lead with short steps and no turns.
- Wheelchair users: lead the mirror with the chair, forward, back and turning, and the partner copies on foot.
Learning goals
- Warm up the lower body.
- Learn judo's sliding step.
- Keep a stable stance while moving.
Teacher tip
If you have mats, go barefoot; on a court, keep sneakers on and avoid skidding. The usual mistake is moving on tiptoe: ask for the whole sole to brush the floor.
