Milk Jug Scoop Ball End Zone Game
Each student makes a scoop from a cut plastic gallon jug and uses it to toss and catch a ball. Then teams play 4-on-4 with no running while holding the ball, building catching, passing, and finding open space.
How to play
- Build it (5 min): the teacher brings jugs already cut below the handle; each student covers the cut edge with masking tape and writes their name on it.
- Partners 5 yards apart (4 min): toss with a low-to-high sweep and catch by giving with the scoop; after 10 catches in a row, step back.
- Set up 30 x 20 yard fields with a 3-yard end zone at each end; teams of 4 in pinnies (2 min to explain).
- Game (three 4-min games): the catcher must stop, may pivot, and has 3 seconds to pass. Score by catching a pass in the other team's end zone.
- A drop or interception switches possession from that spot. After each game, winners rotate fields; use the last 2 minutes to talk about which passes worked.
Rules
- The ball is only played with the scoop, never the free hand.
- Defenders stay an arm's length away and never hit a scoop.
- Three different players must catch it before a team can score.
- Safety: no swinging the scoop above your head.
Variations
Easier
Students may catch by hand and drop the ball into the scoop, with no defense.
Standard
Play 4-on-4 with no traveling and three passes before scoring.
Harder
Each end zone becomes a single hoop and teams play 3-on-3 on a bigger field.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as a fixed passer in a 2-yard zone nobody can enter.
- Visual impairment: use a large, bright ball and call the student's name before passing.
- Lower fitness: chooses a field with passive defense or swaps roles every minute.
Learning goals
- Catch the ball in the scoop by giving with it.
- Move to open space to create a passing lane.
- Appreciate reusing containers as PE equipment.

Teacher tip
Cut the jugs yourself at home with a box cutter; students never handle the blade. Old tennis balls work better than foam balls.
