Mental Rehearsal for Test Day

Lying down and relaxed, students mentally walk through the day of a big exam, from waking up to turning it in, using breathing at moments of tension. It builds anxiety management and a sense of control.

How to play

  1. Students lie on yoga mats, close their eyes, and take six slow breaths with long exhales (1 min).
  2. The teacher guides the first scene: waking up with plenty of time, eating breakfast, and calmly packing supplies (1.5 min).
  3. Second scene: arriving at school, finding the room, and sitting down; the teacher asks them to notice any tension and release it with two breaths (1.5 min).
  4. Third scene: getting the test, reading every question, and starting with the one they know best; if they blank, they breathe and move on (2 min).
  5. Final scene: turning in the test feeling they did their best and walking out calmly (1 min).
  6. Students wiggle hands and feet, roll to one side, and sit up; each thinks about which scene felt hardest (1 min).

Variations

Easier

Visualize only two scenes: arriving at the room and getting the test.

Standard

The full four-scene walkthrough with breathing at tense moments.

Harder

Each student then writes their own visualization script to practice at home the night before.

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Use present-tense, positive phrasing and leave long pauses between scenes. Schedule it one or two weeks before finals, not on test day.
