Memory Map: Sketch Your Route While You Walk
After the race, students walk slowly recalling their course and sketch it from memory on a blank sheet, marking three key decisions. Comparing it with the real map shows what they remember well and where they were navigating 'blind'.

How to play
- Slow walk around the schoolyard, no map, silently recalling the control order and the route taken (2 min).
- Memory sketch on the blank sheet: course shape, features you remember, and three decisions marked with a star (3 min).
- Compare in pairs with the real map: what matched, and which area is empty on the sketch (2 min).
- One sentence on the sheet: 'Next time I'll pay attention to…' (1 min).
Rules
- The real map stays face down until the comparison phase.
- There's no good or bad sketch: what matters is what's missing.
- Walk and keep voices low.
- Keep the sheets for next class.
Variations
Easier
Sketch just the control order.
Standard
Sketch shape, features, and three decisions.
Harder
Sketch with rough distances and an estimated time per leg.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: describes the course aloud to a partner who draws it, then they compare together.
- Fine motor difficulties: draws with a thick marker or describes the course orally.
- Low confidence: can sketch together with someone who ran nearby.
Learning goals
- Lower heart rate with a reflection task.
- Consolidate spatial memory of the course.
- Spot areas where the map wasn't read carefully.
Equipment for a class of 25
- school maps: 30
- blank sheets: 30
- pencils: 30
Teacher tip
It works best right after the race, while memory is fresh. The typical mistake is copying from a partner's map; have everyone keep maps face down until the end.
