Marbles to the Gua: Kneeling Accuracy to Cool Down
Marbles is one of the most widespread street games in the world; in Spain one of the best known is gua, where you shoot your marble into a small hole, and in Mexico canicas is played with its own names and rules depending on the region. Kneeling in pairs, we cool down with a precision challenge.
How to play
- Explain gua: the hole, the thumb flick and the rule that whoever gets into the gua first can «kill» the others. Pairs with four marbles and a cup on its side as the gua (2 min).
- Flick practice: marble resting on the bent index finger, pushed with the thumb toward a chalk line 2 meters away (3 min).
- Gua game: take turns trying to get the marble into the cup; whoever gets in gets a bonus shot to hit the opponent's marble (3 min).
- Cleanup: each pair counts its marbles, puts them in the cup and returns them to the box without any rolling away (2 min).
Rules
- Play kneeling or sitting, in a part of the yard with no foot traffic.
- No throwing marbles: only flick them along the ground.
- We play «for fun»: nobody keeps anyone else's marbles.
- Check the floor before leaving: a stray marble is a slipping hazard.
Variations
Easier
Gua at one meter, and you may push with the whole hand.
Standard

Harder

Adaptations

- Fine-motor difficulties: use ping-pong balls pushed with the palm.

Teacher tip
No marbles? Ping-pong balls work and aren't a slipping hazard. Play outdoors or in a gym corner away from traffic, and count the marbles at the end.
