Map Colors: The Terrain Sets Your Stride
Each color on an orienteering map means a type of terrain, and students change how they run based on the color they see. It warms them up and teaches them to read the map as information about the ground.

How to play
- Free jog while the teacher introduces the colors: yellow is open ground, white is easy-running forest, green is slow vegetation, blue is water, and black is features like rocks or buildings (2 min).
- The teacher holds up a card: yellow, a short fast run; white, jog; green, walk with high knees; blue, circle around a cone without stepping inside; black, stop and jump in place twice (3 min).
- In pairs: one partner flashes colors by hand and the other reacts; switch every 30 seconds (2 min).
- Map leg: write a sequence of four colors on the board; students memorize it and run it through the cone course (3 min).
Rules
- Everyone jogs in the same direction.
- Fast runs last only four or five steps, then slow down gradually.
- On blue, go around the cone: you don't cross water.
- Keep two arm lengths from the person in front.
Variations
Easier
Only three colors: yellow, white and green.
Standard
Five colors, each with its own way of moving.
Harder
Six-color sequences, with a color change called mid-leg.
Adaptations
- Color-blind students: each card also has a large letter (Y, W, G, B, K).
- Deaf students: visual signals only; the teacher always stays in sight.
- Lower-body injury: do the walking version or lead the partner round.
Learning goals
- Know the basic colors of an orienteering map.
- Adjust pace and stride to the terrain.
- Warm up the body progressively.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored card stock: 5
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Show a real map of a nearby park at the start so they see the colors. Common mistake: running the same on green; remind them that thick vegetation is crossed slowly or avoided.
