Many-Legged Monster Challenge
Each group forms a monster that must cross the blacktop touching the ground with only the number of feet and hands the teacher calls, with every member in contact. Students work on balance, creative movement and problem-solving.
How to play
- Make groups of five and use cones to mark a start and a finish 10 yards apart. Every part of the monster must be touching someone (1 min).
- First monster: the teacher calls 'Eight legs!'. The group crosses with only eight points on the ground among feet, hands and knees (3 min).
- Before each crossing, the group has 30 seconds to plan who lifts which foot and how they hold on. Lower the number little by little: six, five, four (6 min).
- If the monster uses extra points, it stops, resets and keeps going from there. The class wins when every monster arrives.
- Final challenge: two groups join into a ten-person monster that must cross with eight points (4 min).
- Wrap-up: each monster shows its best solution to the class (1 min).
Rules
- No one rides on shoulders or on another student's back.
- Piggybacks are only allowed if the rider's feet stay at the carrier's knee height.
- Every part of the monster must stay connected at all times.
- Safety: the monster moves slowly and stops if anyone says 'Stop!'.
Variations
Easier
Groups of four with one point per person plus two bonus points.
Standard
Groups of five going down from eight to four points.
Harder
No feet allowed: only hands, knees and seats.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the wheelchair's wheels count as one point and the group builds the monster around the student.
- Shyness or autism: the student can be the 'scientist' who counts each monster's points and checks the rule.
- Fitness level: mix students of different sizes so no one carries more weight than they can.
Learning goals
- Keep balance with few shared points of contact.
- Find creative movement solutions as a group.
- Keep classmates safe while supporting each other.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Low numbers bring risky ideas such as shoulder rides, so review the rules before each call. If possible, play on grass or mats.
