Low-Compression Tennis: Choose Your Red, Orange or Green Stage
Students try all three low-compression balls (red, orange and green) on courts of different sizes and pick the combination that lets them rally successfully. They learn to match the challenge to their level instead of playing with equipment they can't control.
How to play
- Intro: low-compression balls bounce lower and fly slower; the slower the ball, the smaller the court. Show all three and drop each from the same height (3 min).
- Red station: short court, partner rally counting consecutive hits (6 min).
- Orange station: medium court, same challenge (6 min).
- Green station: long half court, same challenge (6 min).
- Choice and challenge: each pair picks a station based on their scores and plays a game to 7; win two games and you may move up a stage (9 min).
Rules
- Each pair records its best rally at every station before choosing.
- Don't mix the balls: each color goes back to its own bin.
- Keep 3 m between courts, and never walk through a court in use.
Variations
Easier
Two bounces allowed at the red station.
Standard
Rotate through all three stations, then choose and play.
Harder
To move up a stage, win two games and hit a minimum 15-shot rally.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: play at the red or orange station with the two-bounce rule.
- Low vision: the red ball, which is larger in some brands, and a plain wall backdrop make tracking easier.
- Experienced tennis players: start at green and coach at the red station for one turn.
Learning goals
- Compare how the game changes with the ball and court size.
- Choose a suitable level of challenge from your own data.
- Sustain a rally and compete in a short game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis rackets: 30
- low-compression tennis balls: 30
- cones: 30
- badminton net: 3
- masking tape: 2
Teacher tip
The International Tennis Federation uses these stages to start players of any age; they're not "kids' gear." Approximate courts: red 11 m, orange 18 m, green the long half of a tennis court or a volleyball court extended with cones.
