Loose Parts Challenge: Invent a Recycled Game
Each group picks recycled loose parts at a "swap meet," explores what they can do with them, and invents a movement game with its own rules, then teaches it to another group. It builds creativity, team project design, and respect for agreed-upon rules.
How to play
- Swap meet (2 min): boxes, bottles, tubes, newspaper balls, and cones sit in the center. Each group of 5 picks six pieces.
- Explore (5 min): try out what you can do with them: throw, carry, build, balance, or knock down.
- Design (8 min): invent a game where everyone moves the whole time. On a card, write the goal, three rules, one safety rule, and how to score.
- Test (3 min): the group plays its game and adjusts it if anyone stands around or it's too easy.
- Game fair (10 min): each group teaches its game to another group and they play it together for 5 minutes, then switch partner groups.
- Wrap-up (2 min): vote for the most active and the most creative game, and save the cards for recess.
Rules
- No one is eliminated or waits more than 30 seconds.
- Every chosen piece must be used in the game.
- Everyone's ideas are heard before deciding.
- Safety: nothing is thrown at heads and no one steps on bottles.
Variations
Easier
The teacher gives a base game (relay or target toss), and the group changes only the equipment and one rule.
Standard
An open game with six pieces and a complete rules card.
Harder
The game must have two opposing teams and a rule that forces cooperation.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group must include a role this student can play, as a design requirement.
- Autism or shyness: may be the recorder who writes the card or explain the game with a drawing.
- Skill level: offer verb cards (throw, jump, carry) to spark ideas for anyone who gets stuck.
Learning goals
- Create a movement game with a goal, rules, and scoring as a group.
- Agree on rules and follow them during play.
- Discover active uses for discarded materials.
