Long Rope Run-Through Challenge
With a long rope turning, the whole group tries to run through one after another without touching it, chaining as many clean passes as possible for a class record. Students work on rhythm, timing and cooperation.
How to play
- Make two groups of 12 or 13, each with a long rope and two turners. Mark the entry point with a cone on the 'front door' side, where the rope comes down toward the runner (2 min).
- Basic pass: when the rope passes in front and hits the ground, the first student runs in and out the other side without jumping. Everyone tries twice (4 min).
- Chain challenge: one student goes through on each turn of the rope, with no empty turns. The group counts out loud the clean passes in a row (4 min).
- If someone touches the rope, the count goes back to zero but nobody sits out: the next runner keeps going. Turners switch every 3 minutes (4 min).
- Partner level: two students holding hands run through on each turn. Then try running in, jumping once in the middle and running out (4 min).
- Final record: the two groups add their best chains, and the class tries to beat that total in one last attempt (2 min).
Rules
- Always enter from the side marked with the cone.
- Turners keep a steady rhythm and never slow the rope on purpose.
- Touching the rope doesn't put you out: it only resets the count.
- Safety: exit by running forward on a diagonal, away from the turner.
Variations
Easier
The rope swings back and forth like a pendulum instead of turning.
Standard
One student per turn, with no empty turns.
Harder
Trios holding hands, or run in, jump twice and run out.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student turns the rope with a partner's help, or crosses in a wheelchair while the rope swings like a pendulum.
- Hearing impairment or shyness: a partner signals the entry with a tap on the shoulder.
- Fitness level: a student who needs a rest becomes a turner or counts passes out loud.
Learning goals
- Time the entry to the rhythm of a turning rope.
- Link actions with the group without losing the rhythm.
- Beat a class record after several tries.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 2
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is going in when the rope is rising, so cue 'go when it hits the ground in front of you'. At first, turn the rope yourself with a student to keep the rhythm steady.
