Long Rope Line Stretch
Groups of six to eight students line up shoulder to shoulder holding a long rope and stretch together without letting the rope go slack. The rope forces the group to stay in sync and gives support for calm trunk, shoulder, and leg stretches.
How to play
- Students form groups of six to eight; each group takes a long rope, lines up facing forward about 18 inches apart, and holds it with both hands at chest height (1 min).
- The first student in line is the leader: they quietly say "up" and everyone raises the rope overhead with straight arms for three breaths (1 min).
- Side bends: with the rope overhead, the leader says "right" or "left" and the whole line leans that way together, 15 seconds per side, keeping the rope taut (1.5 min).
- Hips and hamstrings: lower the rope to waist height, take a step back, and hinge at the hips with a flat back, using the taut rope for support, 20 seconds (1.5 min).
- The leader moves to the back of the line and the new leader suggests a different stretch that can be done holding the rope, such as a slow squat or a chest opener (2 min).
- Finish by lowering the rope to the floor slowly together, coiling it as a group, and returning it (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody lets go of the rope during a stretch.
- Move together and slowly, following the leader.
- Safety: the rope never goes around anyone's neck or wraps around wrists.
Variations
Easier
The teacher leads all groups and only three stretches are used.
Standard
The leader rotates and each new leader suggests a stretch.
Harder
Groups switch stretches silently, using only a hand signal agreed with the leader.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student sits on a chair at one end of the line and the group adjusts the positions to that height.
- Visual impairment: the student stands in the middle of the line, feels the rope move, and gets verbal cues from the leader.
- Fitness level: more flexible students match the group's range and focus on breathing.
Learning goals
- Coordinate stretches with the rest of the group.
- Use the rope as support to stretch with good alignment.
- Suggest appropriate stretches when taking the leader role.

Teacher tip
Ask leaders to speak softly so groups have to pay attention and the class calms down.
