Lokotx Biltzea: Corn-Cob Gathering Race with Pacing
An adaptation of lokotx biltzea, a Basque rural sport where the runner picks up corn cobs laid out in a row one at a time and carries them to a basket. It trains effort pacing and looks at the farm origins of these events.
How to play
- Context: many Basque rural sports come from farm chores, like chopping logs, carrying loads or gathering corn. Each lane has a bucket at the start and ten balls on cones in a row, about two meters apart (3 min).
- Technique trial: pick up three balls at an easy pace, practicing the turn and bending with the knees (4 min).
- First race: each runner collects all ten balls one by one into the bucket while a partner times and records (6 min).
- Pacing plan: using that time, each student sets a goal, picks a pacing plan (fast start, even pace or fast finish) and runs it again (8 min).
- Pair analysis: compare both times and perceived effort from 1 to 10 (4 min).
Rules
- Place the ball in the bucket; don't throw it.
- Bend your knees to pick up; don't dive.
- Stay in your lane; no crossing into someone else's.
- At least four minutes of recovery between races.
Variations
Easier
Six balls with cones closer together.
Standard
Ten balls about two meters apart.
Harder
Pair relay, three rounds with a fixed one-minute rest, tracking how performance drops.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: balls sit on tall cones or chairs so they can be picked up without bending.
- Visual impairment: a partner guides by voice from the bucket and the lane is marked with a rope on the ground.
- Ankle injury: done at a brisk walk, comparing only with themselves.
Learning goals
- Pace effort in a short, intense event.
- Use time and perceived-effort data to adjust pacing.
- Connect Basque rural sports with traditional farm work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 60
- buckets: 6
- flat cones: 60
- stopwatches: 6
Teacher tip
Tennis balls stand in for corn cobs; if you can get dried corn cobs, try them once. The typical mistake is going all out and fading halfway: the first-race data will show it.
