Limbo Stations
A dance game from the Caribbean in which dancers pass under a pole by leaning back to the beat of the music. It's set up in stations so every student stays active and nobody is out. Students work on flexibility, balance and body control.
How to play
- Limbo comes from Trinidad and Tobago: set up four stations of 6, each with a mat and a pole held by two students (2 min).
- Technique: walk forward with knees bent and upper body leaning back, no hands on the floor (2 min).
- With Caribbean music, everyone passes with the pole at chest height; lower it one hand-width after each round (5 min).
- Anyone who touches the pole repeats the previous height and keeps their best mark; holders switch every two rounds (4 min).
- Final round: the group goes through as a train at a height everyone can clear without moving the pole (2 min).
Rules
- Holders support the pole with open palms underneath so it falls if touched.
- No hands on the floor and no crawling under.
- Always go over the mat, one person at a time.
Variations
Easier
Allow going under sideways or leaning forward, and lower the pole half a hand at a time.
Standard
Forward pass leaning back, lowering one hand-width per round and switching holders every two rounds.
Harder
Pass exactly to the beat, one step per count, with arms crossed over the chest.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair passes under a high ribbon by leaning the torso or head back, or runs the music and sets the height.
- Visual impairment: a partner calls out the distance to the pole, and the pole has a brightly colored ribbon on it.
- Fitness or flexibility: each student picks a starting height, and improvement on their own mark is what counts.
Learning goals
- Control balance in leaning-back positions.
- Improve knee, hip and trunk flexibility through play.
- Beat a personal best while following safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
- poles: 4
- mats: 4
Teacher tip
Watch that nobody falls backward: if balance is lost, it's better to sit down on the mat. Light plastic poles are the safest choice for this game.
