Lifesaver Ball Tag
Three taggers in pinnies try to tag everyone else, but anyone holding one of the foam balls is safe. Runners must get the ball to a threatened teammate in time and can free frozen players with a pass. It builds passing, cooperation and game awareness.
How to play
- Mark off a 20 × 20 m (about 65 × 65 ft) area. Pick 3 taggers in pinnies and hand out 3 foam balls to the rest of the class (1 min).
- On the signal, the taggers try to tag anyone without a ball. A player holding a ball can't be tagged.
- Nobody may hold the ball longer than 3 seconds or run with it: pass it, ideally to someone with a tagger close by.
- Tagged players freeze with arms up and rejoin when a teammate passes them the ball and they catch it cleanly.
- Play 90-second rounds; at the end, count the frozen players and switch taggers. Play 4 rounds (6 min).
- In the last round, only bounce passes are allowed, which are slower and force players to anticipate.
Rules
- Taggers may not touch or intercept the ball.
- If the ball hits the floor, any runner may pick it up, but they are not safe until they catch a pass.
- Safety: run with your head up, especially when moving to receive a pass.
Variations
Easier
Play with 4 balls and 2 taggers, and allow players to hold the ball for 5 seconds.
Standard
Three taggers, three foam balls, a 3-second limit and rescues by caught passes.
Harder
Use only two balls for the whole class, and all passes must be thrown with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student in a wheelchair may hold the ball for 5 seconds, and each caught pass they throw frees two teammates.
- Visual impairment: classmates call the student's name before passing, using rolled or bounce passes.
- Lower fitness: the student plays as a lifeguard in the center circle, where they can't be tagged, and keeps feeding passes.
Learning goals
- Pass accurately to a teammate who is in danger.
- Read the game to anticipate where the ball will be needed.
- Work together to keep the whole group in the game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 3
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
At first everyone wants to keep the ball, so count the 3 seconds out loud during round 1. Pick fast taggers to start so the class quickly realizes that passing is the only way to stay safe.
