How to play
- In a circle, agree on six signals: fist up = jog, rolling hands = mobility, palms down = walk, fingers moving up and down = high knees, arm circle = change direction, still open hand = stop (2 min).
- The teacher leads a first silent warm-up using the six signals (2 min).
- Groups of six in single file. The front student leads for one minute with signals only, then goes to the back, until everyone has led (4 min).
- Each group invents a new signal for an exercise, teaches it to the class without talking, and everyone tries it (2 min).
Rules
- Total silence while leading; signals only.
- The leader looks back to check the group is following before changing.
- Keep at least three meters between lines so nobody collides on direction changes.
Variations
Easier
Four signals only, and the leader stands still facing the group.
Standard
Six signals with the leader moving.
Harder
The leader combines two signals at once (for example, high knees plus arm circles).
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: this activity plays to their strengths; offer them the first turn to lead.
- Students with visual impairments: a partner guide quietly describes each signal to them.
- Students with limited mobility: they lead from the side and adapt the movement to their pace.
Learning goals
- Warm up the body gradually.
- Lead a group with clear gestures.
- Pay attention to visual information.
Teacher tip
Draw the six signals on a whiteboard or poster so students can check them. The usual mistake is switching exercises before everyone sees it: ask leaders to hold each signal for two seconds.
