Lane Team Handball
A 3-on-3 plus goalie team handball game in which every player may only move along their own lane. It forces teams to use the full width of the court, pass between lanes and find the open teammate before shooting.
How to play
- Set up two 20 x 15 m courts with small goals and mark three lanes running end to end with cones. Make 5 teams of 5 in pinnies (3 min).
- Each team plays a goalie, three court players (one per lane) and a sub. Each defender only guards the attacker in their lane.
- Play 14 minutes with the three-step, dribble and three-second rules. Before a shot, the ball must cross two different lanes or the goal does not count.
- Every 3 minutes, players rotate one lane, the sub comes in as goalie and the goalie steps out. The fifth team referees and rotates in every 4 minutes for the team that has played longest.
- Last 3 minutes: no lanes, free play. Ask which lane produced the most goals and why.
Rules
- Stepping out of your lane gives the ball to the other team.
- No grabbing or ripping the ball away: steal only by intercepting passes or dribbles.
- Court players may not enter the goalie's 4 m area.
Variations
Easier
No defender in the center lane, so there is always an open pass.
Standard
Three-on-three plus goalie, two lanes before a shot.
Harder
The ball must cross all three lanes, and only goals from an outside lane count.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays the widened center lane, and nobody guards closer than one meter.
- Shy students or autism: start as goalie or sub and always play the same lane, marked with a cone in their color.
- Lower fitness: switch roles every 2 minutes and use 15 x 12 m courts.
Learning goals
- Spread across the width of the court on offense.
- Choose the pass to the teammate in the open lane.
- Respect the rotations and the refereeing team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 4
- cones: 24
- pinnies: 25
- small goals: 4
Teacher tip
At first everyone crowds the middle, so freeze play and ask them to find the open space. Put the lane cones on the end lines and midcourt line so nobody trips.
