Knockout Sprint: Mass-Start Heats with Forking
A knockout sprint format with mass-start heats of six and short forked courses, so quick decisions matter more than following someone. Anyone knocked out of a heat becomes an official or observer, so nobody sits around.
How to play
- Explain and draw heats of six; show how forking forces each runner to read their own map (4 min).
- Round 1: five heats of 2–3 minutes using two start areas; the top three in each heat advance. Runners who don't advance become control officials (12 min).
- Semifinals: two or three heats on new courses; the top three advance (8 min).
- Final, plus a consolation final with the best of those knocked out in the semis (6 min).
- Analysis: officials report the mistakes they saw at their controls, and each runner says whether physical speed or decision speed mattered more (5 min).
Rules
- At the mass start, everyone gets their own lane; pushing is a DQ.
- Each runner follows their own control combination, marked on their map.
- No cutting through out-of-bounds zones: officials are watching.
- Getting knocked out isn't the end: everyone keeps taking part as an official or observer.
Variations
Easier
Heats without elimination, just a cumulative ranking.
Standard
Knockout rounds with three qualifiers per heat.
Harder
More forking and less map-reading time before the start.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: their own heat on an accessible course with comparable timing, or head finish official.
- Visual impairment: runs with a guide in a heat that starts ten seconds earlier to avoid crowding.
- Low confidence: can go straight to the consolation final or act as a technique observer.
Learning goals
- Make fast route decisions under pressure from opponents.
- Stay accurate in a mass start without following others.
- Take on official and observer roles objectively.

Teacher tip
Print every heat's maps before class and keep them in envelopes: improvising here doesn't work. Make sure no one ends up idle after elimination; official roles need a clear job.
