Kneeling Floor Air Hockey
Kneeling one-on-one duels on a small taped rink where students push a sliding disc into the other player's goal, just like air hockey. It develops reaction time, hand-eye coordination and attacking and defending decisions.
How to play
- Tape 6 rinks about 8 x 4 ft, with a 20-inch goal between two cones at each short end and a folded yoga mat behind each goal (3 min).
- Demonstrate (2 min): the disc goes face down, you strike it with an open palm so it slides, and you defend with hands flat on the floor.
- Groups of 4 per rink: two play kneeling behind their goals and two keep score and return discs that leave the rink.
- A goal is a disc that slides between the cones; the player who was scored on restarts. Duels last 3 min, then roles switch.
- Play 4 duels of 3 min (12 min); any extra student joins a rink as a referee.
- Final (3 min): king of the rink, where each rink winner rotates one rink to the right for a last duel.
Rules
- Push the disc; never throw it or lift it off the floor.
- Knees stay behind the goal line.
- Safety: keep your head up and away from the rink, and play with your hand only.
- Scorekeepers, not players, return discs that slide out.
Variations
Easier
Widen the goal to 32 inches and use a bigger disc.
Standard
20-inch goals and 3-minute duels.
Harder
Play with the non-dominant hand or with two discs at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated in a chair with the rink set on two pushed-together desks.
- Visual impairment: use a brightly colored disc and mark the edges with raised tape.
- Skill level: anyone who wins two duels in a row switches to the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- React quickly to the path of the disc.
- Choose between a straight shot and a bank shot off the side.
- Respect the score and the roles at each rink.
Equipment for a class of 25
- sliding discs: 8
- cones: 24
- masking tape: 2
- yoga mats: 12
Teacher tip
Mats prevent sore knees; if you have none, let students sit back on their heels. Encourage bank shots off the side lines, which is what gets the class most excited.
