Knee-to-Wall Ankle Mobility Check
An ankle warm-up that starts and ends with the knee-to-wall test, with mobility drills and calf raises in between. Students measure their ankle flexibility, see the effect of the warm-up, and work to prevent sprains.
How to play
- Walk for 1 minute on the toes, on the heels, and on the outer and inner edges of the feet.
- First check (2 minutes): in pairs, with a tape strip on the floor at a right angle to the wall marked every inch, drive the knee to the wall without lifting the heel; the partner records the longest distance on each foot.
- Mobility (2 minutes): 15 knee rocks toward the wall per leg, aiming over the pinky toe, the middle, and the big toe.
- Step calf raises (2 minutes): on the edge of an aerobic step with one hand on the wall, 12 two-foot raises lowering the heel in 3 seconds, then 8 on one leg.
- Retest (1 minute): repeat the test and compare with the first result.
- Transfer (1 minute): 20 easy two-foot hops and 10 per leg.
Rules
- During the test the heel stays down; if it lifts, the mark does not count.
- Safety: step up and down facing the step, one hand on the wall.
- Students compare only with themselves, not with classmates.
Variations
Easier
Calf raises on the flat floor on two feet.
Standard
Test, mobility, eccentric step calf raises, and a retest.
Harder
Single-leg raises with a pause at the bottom and single-leg hops onto the step.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: push the foot against a band and do slow ankle circles.
- Students with autism: record before and after on a two-color visual chart.
- Higher fitness level: add 10 single-leg lateral hops over a line.
Learning goals
- Measure ankle mobility with a simple test.
- Improve ankle flexibility before activity.
- Evaluate a warm-up's effect with personal data.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rolls of masking tape: 2
- aerobic steps: 13
Teacher tip
Tape the strips on a smooth wall before class. A difference of more than an inch between feet is a good reason to do extra work on the tighter side.
