Knee Rugby on the Mats
A team wrestling game where two teams of 4, always on their knees, try to touch a foam football down behind the other team's line. Defenders may hold the carrier around the trunk, which forces quick passing. Students practice ground wrestling, teamwork, and decision-making.
How to play
- Set up two 8 x 5 yd mat areas with a 1-yard end zone at each end. Form 6 teams of 4 in pinnies; the extra student helps officiate (3 min).
- On each mat area, two teams play and the third officiates from the sidelines and end zones. Everyone moves only on their knees.
- Start from the middle. The carrier may advance, pass in any direction, or touch the ball down in the other end zone to score a point.
- Defenders may hold the carrier by wrapping the trunk. After a 3-second hold, the official calls 'release!' and the carrier must pass or set the ball down.
- After each point, restart in the middle. Each game lasts 3 minutes; then the officiating team plays the winner.
- Keep going until every team has played at least 3 games and officiated once.
Rules
- No grabbing the head, neck, hair, or clothes, and no pulling straightened arms.
- No standing or diving onto an opponent; a player who stands loses the ball.
- Only the ball carrier may be held.
- On the whistle or stop signal, everyone lets go.
Variations
Easier
No holding: a two-hand touch on the carrier forces a pass.
Standard
Four on four on the knees with a required release after 3 seconds.
Harder
Backward passes only, as in rugby, and a half-yard end zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated as a fixed base who receives passes and cannot be held for more than one second.
- Discomfort with contact or shyness: start as an official, then play without holds, then the full game.
- Strength or fitness: balance teams by weight and allow free substitutions to rest.
Learning goals
- Decide whether to advance, pass, or protect the ball under pressure.
- Hold and escape on the ground following safety rules.
- Cooperate and respect calls made by student officials.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 24
- foam footballs: 2
- colored pinnies: 24
Teacher tip
Pile-ups on the ball are the riskiest moment: blow the whistle if more than three players bunch up. It is great lead-up for flag rugby and other combative games.
