King of the Beach Rotating Partners
A beach volleyball format where groups of four play short 2v2 sets, switching partners each set and scoring points individually. Students learn to adapt to different teammates, communicate quickly, and play two-on-two.
How to play
- Mark 26 x 13 ft courts per side with cones under each net; groups of 4 per court (one group of 5 rotates a sit-out).
- Set 1: A and B vs. C and D; set 2: A and C vs. B and D; set 3: A and D vs. B and C.
- Each set goes to 7 points or 6 minutes, with underhand serves allowed and three touches per side.
- Each player individually records the points their pair wins in every set; after three sets, add them up.
- The top player on each court moves up a court and the bottom player moves down; repeat the round if time allows.
Rules
- Call the ball out loud ("Mine!") before every touch.
- No touching the net or stepping into the opponents' court.
- For safety, if two players go for the same ball, the one who called it first takes it.
Variations
Easier
Allow catch-and-throw on the second touch.
Standard
Sets to 7 with three touches and underhand serves.
Harder
Overhand serves required and no open-hand tips on attacks, as in beach volleyball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays on a smaller court with one bounce allowed in their zone.
- Shy students: rotating partners means no picking teams; the teacher sets the groups of four.
- Lower skill level: use a lighter ball and a slightly lower net.
Learning goals
- Adapt to different partners in 2v2 play.
- Communicate clearly about who takes each ball.
- Build a three-touch attack with only one teammate.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 6
- nets: 3
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Prepare a card for each court with the order of the three sets so no time is lost. Sand is ideal; on a hard court, don't allow diving.
