How to play
- Everyone walks at medium tempo. When anyone stops, everyone stops; when anyone starts, everyone starts (4 min).
- Contagion: if someone turns, drops low or changes direction, whoever sees it responds right away (5 min).
- Delayed response: react two counts late, which sends waves across the room (4 min).
- Half the class performs, half watches; observers note the most alive moment and who started it. Then switch (7 min).
Rules
- React to what you see, not to what anyone says.
- Change direction without cutting sharply across anyone.
- Drops to a low level reach the floor with control.
Variations
Easier
Stop and start only.
Standard
Contagion of turns, levels and directions.
Harder
Two different stimuli at once in different zones of the room.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: no change needed since it's all visual; give them the initiator role often.
- Blind or low-vision students: move with a guide who passes on changes through touch on the arm.
- Limited mobility: respond with torso and arms or with chair turns.
Learning goals
- React quickly to visual cues.
- Build group focus and stage presence.
- Identify what creates alive moments onstage.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Works best in total silence, no music. The usual pattern is everyone waiting for the same person to start: ask each student to initiate at least twice.
