Keypad Challenge
Numbered cards lie scattered inside a rope circle, and the group, starting 10 yards away, must touch them in order as fast as possible with only one person inside at a time. Students work on planning, decision-making and speed.
How to play
- Set up two keypads: a rope circle about 10 feet across with 26 numbered cards face up and mixed, plus a cone start line 10 yards away. Make two groups of 12 or 13 (2 min).
- Explain the challenge: touch cards 1 to 26 in order; only one person may be inside the circle, and everyone must touch at least two cards (1 min).
- First try with no planning. Time it from the first runner leaving until the last one is back behind the line; each mistake (two inside or a skipped number) adds 5 seconds (3 min).
- Two-minute planning: the group decides who touches which numbers, the running order and where to enter and exit (2 min).
- Four more tries with 1 minute to adjust in between. Each group records its time; the class record is the sum of both groups' best times (10 min).
- Wrap-up: each group explains the strategy that saved the most time (2 min).
Rules
- Only one person inside the circle at a time.
- Cards stay where they are: touch them only with a hand.
- Groups compete against their own time, not each other.
- Safety: enter and exit the circle on different sides to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Only 12 cards and no penalties.
Standard
26 cards, one person inside and a 5-second penalty.
Harder
Touch even numbers first and then odd ones, or go in reverse order.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: set the circle on smooth ground and closer for a wheelchair user, or make the student the strategist and timer.
- Visual impairment: use cards with large raised numbers and a partner who guides the student to the circle.
- Fitness level: move the start line to 15 yards for high-energy groups.
Learning goals
- Design and carry out a group plan to improve a result.
- Make quick decisions while moving.
- Evaluate each try and adjust the strategy.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 52
- long rope: 2
- cones: 4
- stopwatch: 2
Teacher tip
The big jump comes when groups realize they can wait around the outside of the circle before their turn. Let them discover it instead of telling them on the first try.
