Jota Warm-Up: The Basic Step in Three Beats
The jota is a traditional dance from many regions of Spain, such as Aragon, Navarre, Castile and Valencia, in triple time with little hops and raised arms. This warm-up uses its basic step to wake up the legs and coordination.

How to play
- Walk around the space and clap hard on the one of every three beats of the music (2 min).
- In rows of five, basic step without the hop: toe forward, cross and switch feet counting one, two, three (2 min).
- Add the hop on the standing foot and raise the arms, snapping fingers or imitating castanets (2 min).
- Pairs facing each other: eight bars of the basic step and a full turn in place (2 min).
- Final round: all pairs at once, changing partners after each turn (2 min).
Rules
- Small hops, always on the balls of the feet.
- Arms up but relaxed, no neck tension.
- Pairs can be any mix of boys and girls.
- If you get lost, jump back in on the next one.
Variations
Easier
Just mark the three-beat pattern with steps and claps, no hop.
Standard
Basic step with hop and arms, in pairs.
Harder
Link the basic step, a turn and a place swap with your partner.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: rest a hand on the speaker or follow an arm marking the one.
- Students with limited mobility: jota arms and castanets from the wheelchair, marking the three with the upper body.
- Students still building coordination: do the step without arms until it clicks.
Learning goals
- Recognize and follow a three-beat meter.
- Warm up ankles and calves with controlled hops.
- Appreciate a traditional dance found in several regions.

Teacher tip
Ask whether anyone dances jota or has family who does: volunteers often step up to teach. Common mistake: hopping on every beat; the hop only goes on one of the three.
