Joint Balloon: Ankles to Shoulders Without a Drop

How to play
- Pairs with one balloon. Explain the order: ankle, knee, hip, elbow, shoulder and head (1 min).
- Hits with the foot and ankle only, alternating feet (1 min).
- Hits with the knee and then the thigh or hip, alternating sides (2 min).
- Hits with the elbow and shoulder, with arm circles between hits (2 min).
- Final challenge: the pair counts how many hits in a row they get while switching joints on every hit (2 min).
Rules
- Touch the balloon only with the joint called.
- Watch the balloon and the space so you don't bump into other pairs.
- If the balloon drops, pick it up and keep going with no penalty.
- Handle balloons gently; if one pops, ask for another.
Variations
Easier
Students may catch and toss the balloon before each hit.
Standard
Alternate hits with the joint called.
Harder
Two balloons per pair, or groups of three with one balloon.
Adaptations
- Students with a latex allergy: latex-free balloons or very light paper balls.
- Wheelchair users: use elbows, shoulders, head and wrists; the partner adjusts hit height.
- Students with visual impairments: a balloon with a bell or a little rice inside so they can hear it.
Learning goals
- Mobilize the main joints in an orderly way.
- Improve coordination with different body parts.
- Cooperate with a partner to keep the challenge going.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balloons: 15
Teacher tip
Blow up the balloons before class and keep them in a large bag. Always ask about latex allergies. The classic mistake is using the hands without noticing: call out the joint at every switch.
