Internal Clock: Jog and Nail 30 Seconds
In pairs, one student moves and stops when they think an exact amount of time has passed while the partner times it. It warms up the body and trains the focus a tournament timekeeper needs.

How to play
- Free jog; on the signal, everyone jogs until they think 15 seconds have passed and stops; the teacher calls out the real time (2 min).
- Pairs with one cone: one moves around the cone however the partner says (side shuffle, skipping, butt kicks) and stops at what they think is 30 seconds; the partner times it and gives the difference (3 min).
- Switch roles with new movements (3 min).
- Final challenge: the pair moves together at different paces (one jogs, one speed-walks) and tries to stop at the same moment at 20 seconds; it counts if they're within one second (2 min).
Rules
- No counting out loud and no looking at watches.
- The stopwatch stays with the student standing still, never the one running.
- All pairs circle their cone in the same direction.
- Share the difference without teasing: everyone's off at first.
Variations
Easier
Estimate 10 seconds while walking.
Standard
Estimate 30 seconds with varied movements.
Harder
Estimate 45 seconds while the partner calls out random numbers as a distraction.
Adaptations
- Low vision: uses a talking stopwatch or the partner calls out the result.
- Limited mobility: estimates the time while doing arm circles or moving in a wheelchair.
- Attention difficulties: starts with 10-second intervals and builds up gradually.
Learning goals
- Warm up with varied movement.
- Improve time perception while moving.
- Prepare for the timekeeper role at events and tournaments.
Equipment for a class of 25
- stopwatches: 14
- cones: 14
Teacher tip
Short on stopwatches? One student can time two runners, or students can use their own digital watches. Point out that a tournament timekeeper loses track when they get caught up watching the game; that's exactly what this trains.
