Inter-Class Tournament Organized by Students
An inter-class tournament run entirely by students through committees for organization, officiating, communication and facilities. Students develop independence, initiative, responsibility and cooperation on a shared project.
How to play
- Committees (5 min): the class splits into four committees: organization (schedule and results), officiating, communication (posters and announcements) and facilities (setting up courts and equipment).
- Planning (10 min): each committee prepares its part; organization picks the sport, the format (round robin or bracket) and the scoring system, and officiating adapts the rules.
- Setup (5 min): the facilities committee sets up courts with cones and balls according to the schedule.
- Tournament (20 min): 5–6-minute games between mixed teams from the class or other classes; students referee and the organization committee records results.
- Evaluation (5 min): each committee reviews what worked, what didn't and suggests one improvement for the next tournament.
Rules
- Fair play and full respect for the referees, who are students too.
- Each committee does its job and answers to the rest of the class.
- Warm up before playing and wait outside the courts.
- The teacher supervises and only steps in for safety issues or serious conflicts.
Variations
Easier
One sport between two classes, with a schedule provided by the teacher.
Standard
Several sports in a round-robin format between classes.
Harder
A tournament open to other grades with sign-ups, posters and an awards ceremony.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a leading role on the organization, communication or officiating committee, plus an adapted sport if they want to play.
- Shyness or autism: specific committee tasks with a role card and a buddy to work with.
- Mixed skill levels: balanced mixed teams and rules that require everyone to take part.
Learning goals
- Develop independence and initiative by organizing a sports event.
- Cooperate on a shared project by taking on responsibilities.
- Practice fair play as both a player and a referee.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balls: 6
- cones: 30
- planning worksheets: 25
- pinnies: 20
- whistles: 3
Teacher tip
Let committees make mistakes within safe limits: the learning is in solving problems. Have a plan B (sport and courts) in case something falls through.

1v1 Ball Volley Matches
1v1 ball volley: singles games on a small court with a low net, hitting the ball over the net and allowing one bounce. Students work on striking, court positioning and quick decision-making.
Acrosport in Groups of 4
Partner and group stunts (acrosport) in groups of 4: building simple human pyramids and balances with bases, flyers and spotters while following safety rules. Students develop strength, balance, cooperation and creativity by linking poses together.
Adapted 6v6 Volleyball
6v6 volleyball with adapted rules so the ball stays in play longer and the whole team takes part: catching is allowed on the first contact and serves come from closer in. Students practice the set, the forearm pass (bump), the serve and rotation.
Adapted American Football: Flag Football
Flag football: a non-contact version of American football where a play ends when a defender pulls one of the flags from the ball carrier's belt. Students work on throwing a football, team strategy and fair play.
Adapted Baseball/Rounders with Batting
A modified bat-and-ball game, somewhere between baseball and rounders, with hitting a softly pitched ball, running four bases and organized fielding. Students practice striking with an implement, catching, decision-making and team strategy.
Adapted Beach Volleyball (No Net)
Modified 2v2 beach volleyball with no net: a line of cones on the ground divides the courts and the ball must travel high over it. Students practice sets, forearm passes (bumps) and communicating with their partner.
