Inner Clock: Jog and Stop When You Think a Minute Is Up
In groups of three, one student jogs with no watch and signals when they think the target time is up, while another checks it with the tablet's stopwatch. It warms up the body and trains awareness of time and pace.
PhaseWarm-up
Duration10 min
Ages12–14
SpaceOutdoor yard
EquipmentTablets, cones
IntensityModerate
How to play
- Easy jog around the cones with general joint mobility (2 min).
- In threes: one student jogs and raises a hand when they think 30 seconds are up; another times it and tells them how far off they were (2 min).
- Rotate roles so all three get to estimate 30 seconds (2 min).
- 60-second challenge: change pace (easy, medium, easy) each time you think 20 seconds have passed (2 min).
- One last try to land within 3 seconds of a minute, then two short sprints (2 min).
Rules
- The runner wears no watch and doesn't count out loud.
- The timer holds the tablet and stays still, outside the loop.
- Everyone jogs in the same direction and passes on the outside.
- You win by beating your own gap, not by running faster.
Variations
Easier
Estimate 15 seconds instead of 30.
Standard
Estimate 30 and 60 seconds with pace changes.
Harder
Estimate 90 seconds with three paces, without looking at anyone in the group.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: jog with a guide and signal by voice instead of raising a hand.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the timer shows them the screen with the gap when they finish.
- Students with a leg injury: do the challenge walking or with arm mobility in place.
Learning goals
- Warm up with a progressive jog.
- Improve awareness of time and personal pace.
- Use a digital stopwatch for instant feedback.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tablets: 8
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Any tablet's built-in stopwatch works, or regular handheld stopwatches. Common mistake: runners count too fast at the start; ask them to notice it and fix it on the next try.
