I Am a Tree: Building Group Scenes
A drama game in which one student steps into the scene, says what they are and freezes; others add related elements until a complete picture forms. It builds creativity, listening and creating stories together with the body.
How to play
- Seat the class in a semicircle facing a marked stage area (2 min). Demonstrate: step in, strike a pose and say, "I am a tree."
- A second student steps in and builds on the picture, for example, "I am the bird on the tree's branch," and freezes. A third adds another element: "I am the apple about to fall."
- With three people the picture is complete. The first person chooses one of the other two to stay ("I'll take the apple") and leaves with the other. The one who stays repeats their line and the scene starts again from there.
- Play 6 minutes as a whole class so everyone gets the mechanics, making sure every student steps in at least once.
- Split into 4 groups of 6 (6 min) playing at the same time in different corners; circulate and suggest starting themes (the circus, the ocean floor, a kitchen).
- Wrap-up (4 min): each group shows its favorite frozen picture and the class makes up a story line to explain it.
Rules
- Each new element must connect to what is already on stage.
- Poses never put weight on classmates: you may touch, but not lean or carry.
- The audience watches quietly and does not correct or laugh at ideas.
Variations
Easier
Give a list of themes and close each picture with just two people.
Standard
Three-person pictures with a choice of who stays.
Harder
Five-person pictures that, on a clap, move for 5 seconds as if the scene came to life.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student joins from their position; their elements can be fixed objects (a lamppost, a rock) or seated characters.
- Shy students: they can join as the second or third element, which is usually easier than starting.
- Autism: preview the structure with a three-step picture example and respect a preference for not touching anyone.
Learning goals
- Create meaningful body pictures from other people's ideas.
- Listen to and accept classmates' offers to build something together.
- Hold an expressive pose with control and stillness.
Teacher tip
Stress that there are no bad ideas and celebrate surprising connections. Several kids often jump in at once: set the rule that you raise a hand and wait for your nod before entering.
