Human Memory Match: Sports Moves
Pairs secretly choose the same sports move and then scatter into rows like face-down cards; two players take turns flipping them to find the matching pairs. It's the classic Memory card game played with bodies, building focus, visual memory and expression.
How to play
- Choose 2 players, who step away without looking. Everyone else pairs up and each pair secretly agrees on a slow-motion sports move: a volleyball serve, a free throw, a freestyle stroke...
- Partners split up and everyone mixes into 4 rows, standing still with arms crossed, like face-down cards in a game of Memory.
- The players return. Taking turns, each player gently taps two classmates on the shoulder; those two perform their move in slow motion for 3 seconds and cross their arms again.
- If the two moves match, that pair sits down and the player scores a point and goes again; if not, it's the other player's turn.
- The game ends when all pairs are found or after 4 minutes; whoever finds the most pairs wins.
- Pick two new players from the first pairs that sat down and play a second round with new moves.
Rules
- Tapped 'cards' perform their move in slow motion and in place, without traveling.
- No hints with faces, laughing or glances.
- Tap classmates gently on the shoulder.
- Each pair keeps exactly the same move for the whole game.
Variations
Easier
Play with 6 pairs and moves from very familiar sports.
Standard
About 11 pairs with skill moves from different sports.
Harder
Use similar moves from the same sport, like different types of passes, so students must notice fine details.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can be a card with an arm-only move, or a player with a partner who taps for them.
- Shy students can be cards with a simple move agreed on with their partner.
- For students with memory difficulties, let them play as a team with a classmate who helps them remember.
Learning goals
- Exercise visual memory and sustained attention.
- Perform sports skill movements with accuracy and control.
- Follow rules and take turns in a calm game.
Teacher tip
With an odd number, one student does a solo move, the wild card, with no match. Check the moves pairs choose so none are repeated.
