Human Continuum Lesson Check
Students line up along a rope on the floor that runs from 'Strongly agree' to 'Strongly disagree' to show how they feel about statements on the lesson. It builds honest self-assessment, explaining your reasoning and respect for other views.
How to play
- Lay a long rope about 30 ft long on the floor and tape a cardstock sign at each end: 'Strongly agree' and 'Strongly disagree'; the middle means 'somewhat'.
- Students stand about 10 ft back from the rope. Read the first statement out loud, for example: 'Today I followed the rules even when my team was losing.'
- Each student walks slowly and silently to the spot on the rope that best matches their opinion; they have 15 seconds.
- Ask 2 or 3 students standing in different spots to explain in one sentence why they chose that spot; everyone else listens without arguing.
- Anyone who changed their mind may move, and the group looks at the final line-up.
- Repeat with 4 statements in total (effort, sportsmanship, helping classmates and enjoyment), about 90 seconds each, and finish with one deep breath together.
Rules
- Always walk; no running or pushing to find a spot.
- Every opinion is valid; nobody judges or laughs at where someone stands.
- When you explain your spot, talk about yourself, not about classmates.
- You can pass without speaking if you'd rather not explain.
Variations
Easier
Use just three spots marked with cones (yes, sort of, no) instead of a continuous line.
Standard
A continuous line with four statements and two or three explanations per statement.
Harder
After each statement, students at the ends suggest what they'd do next class to move closer to the ideal.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can point to their spot or ask a classmate to stand there for them.
- For shy students or students with autism, let them jot their answer privately first and then move, with no pressure to explain.
- With a very energetic group, add one deep breath before each move to keep things calm.
Learning goals
- Honestly evaluate their own performance in the lesson.
- Express and justify an opinion in front of the group.
- Respect different points of view about sportsmanship and effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 1
- cardstock signs: 2
Teacher tip
Start with an easy, low-stakes statement to break the ice. Watch for students who always stand in the middle: they may not feel safe sharing, and a quick private check-in can help.
